Kitesurfing: How to Get on the Board

Getting on the board and experiencing the rush of gliding across the water is an exciting milestone in your kitesurfing journey. However, it can also be a bit challenging for beginners. But fear not! In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of getting on the board and give you some useful tips to make your transition smoother.

1. Master the Basics:

Before attempting to get on the board, it’s important to have a solid foundation of basic kitesurfing skills. Make sure you are comfortable flying the kite, riding with the power, and controlling your speed and direction. Practice water starts, upwind riding, and gaining board control while riding the kite with one hand.

2. Choose the Right Conditions:

Ideal conditions for getting on the board are moderate winds (around 10-15 knots), flat water, and a spacious area free of obstacles. It’s best to choose a day when the wind is more consistent to make it easier to control the kite and maintain the necessary speed.

3. Positioning:

Once you have found a suitable spot, position yourself in the water with the kite at 12 o’clock, directly above you. Ensure your board is pointing downwind. Place your back foot in the foot strap and keep your front foot on the deck.

4. Initiating the Water Start:

To initiate the water start, dive the kite slowly towards the edge of the wind window. This will generate tension in the lines and provide the necessary power to get you moving. Simultaneously, lean back and start straightening your front leg while applying pressure onto your back foot.

5. Maintaining Balance:

As the kite pulls you, keep your upper body upright and maintain an even weight distribution on both feet. This will prevent you from tipping over or losing control. Focus on keeping your board at a slight angle to the wind, allowing it to slice through the water smoothly.

6. Standing Up on the Board:

Once you feel confident and stable, it’s time to stand up on the board. Slowly transfer your weight from your back foot to your front foot while simultaneously unbending your front leg. As you stand up, keep your knees slightly bent, and keep your weight centered over the board for better balance.

7. Controlling Speed and Direction:

To control your speed and direction, use your front foot to steer the board by applying pressure on the toes or heels. Practice carving turns by shifting your weight and applying pressure on your toes or heels accordingly.

Remember, getting on the board takes practice and patience. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t succeed on your first try. With time and perseverance, you will nail it!
